Canadian researchers are optimistic about collaborating with Bangladeshi farmers
PKSF is providing technical and financial support for the overall development of the agriculture sector, including agriculture, fisheries and livestock, in Chapainawabganj through its Partner Organization, Proyas Manobik Unnayan Society. On 31 March 2024, PKSF’s Managing Director, Dr Nomita Halder ndc, along with a four-member delegation from the Global Institute of Food Security (GIFS) at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, visited these activities.
The delegation witnessed Katimon mango and dragon fruit orchards in Elaipur Bailkapara of Nachol upazila, onion seed and wheat cultivation, pulse crop production (peas and lentils) in the Sonaichandi area, and a fish farming exhibition in the Khairabad area of Gomstapur upazila. During the visit, Dr Nomita Halder remarked, “The four-member GIFS delegation has come to Bangladesh from Canada to witness how farmers produce food, diversify their products, and conserve agricultural, fishery, and livestock products with our help. They will provide us with their advice upon returning to their country.”
At this time, Bangabandhu Research Chair of GIFS Andrew Sharpe said, “I am impressed to observe the farming practices of the farmers here … we look forward to increasing cooperation between Bangladeshi farmers and GIFS to ensure food security.”
Other members of the Canadian delegation include Senior Research Officer under the National Research Council of Canada Pankaj Bhowmik, Ph.D., International Program Development Manager of GIFS Hasan Ahmed, and GIFS Representative for Bangladesh Dr Sreekanth Attaluri.
Among PKSF officials present were General Manager Md Abdul Malek, Manager Suhas Shankar Chowdhury, and Deputy Manager Md Abdul Hakim. Representatives from Proyas Manobik Unnayan Society, including Executive Director Hasib Hossain, Director Alea Ferdous, Senior Assistant Director Abul Khair Khan, Assistant Director Zulfikar Ali, and other officials, were also present during the visit.
